P-1: Coenzyme Q10 and Male Infertility
Authors
Abstract:
Background: The aim of this study was to evaluate seminal plasma coenzyme Q10 levels and oxidative stress in patients with different types of male infertility. Materials and Methods: The study took place in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, College of Medicine, Al-Nahrain University- Baghdad-Iraq from the period of November 2004 till July 2006. Sixty patients with male infertility were recruited Al-Kadhimia Teaching Hospital-Baghdad and included in this study. The male patients were categorized according to their seminal fluid parameters to oligozoospermia (n=32), azoospermia (n=22) and asthenozoospermia (n=6). All results obtained were compared with age-matched healthy controls group consisting of 39 subjects. Seminal plasma samples were analyzed for coenzyme Q10 by an improved high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) method and for malondialdehyde (MDA) as an index of oxidative stress. Results: The mean seminal plasma CoQ10 was 1.10 ± 0.169 mg/L in oligozoospermia, 0.567 ± 0.098 mg/L in azoospermia, 0.740 ± 0.06 mg/L in patients with asthenozoospermia and 1.652 ± 0.139mg/L in control group. The seminal plasma CoQ10 levels in all infertility groups showed a significantly difference from the control group (p≤0.0001). High significant increase (p≤0.001) in the MDA levels was noted in the seminal plasma of oligozoospermia 11.37 ± 1.64 µmole/L, azoospermia 13.87 ± 1.62 µmole/L and asthenozoospermia group 9.508 ± 0.533 µmole/L whereas the level in the control group was 8.517 ± 0.622 µmole/L. Seminal plasma CoQ10 was inversely and significantly correlated with MDA(r=- 0.760; p=0.000). Conclusion: Elevated seminal plasma coQ10 levels are associated directly with good semen parameters and inversely with the oxidative stress.

Oxidative stress, decreased antioxidant capacity, and impaired sperm mitochondrial function are the main factors contributing to male infertility. The goal of the present study was to assess the effect of the per os treatment with Carni-Q-Nol (440 mg L-carnitine fumarate + 30 mg ubiquinol + 75 IU vitamin E + 12 mg vitamin C in each softsule) in infertile men on sperm parameters, concentration o...

Coenzyme Q10 is a vitamin-like substance used in the treatment of a variety of disorders primarily related to suboptimal cellular energy metabolism and oxidative injury. Studies supporting the efficacy of coenzyme Q10 appear most promising for neurodegenerative disorders such as Parkinson's disease and certain encephalomyopathies for which coenzyme Q10 has gained orphan drug status. Results in ...

While some complementary and alternative techniques have been studied scientifically, high-quality data regarding safety, effectiveness, and mechanism of action are limited or controversial for most therapies. Whenever possible, it is recommended that practitioners be licensed by a recognized professional organization that adheres to clearly published standards. In addition, before starting a n...

CoQ10 was discovered by Dr. Frederick L. Crane at the University of Wisconsin in the late 1950s during his research on the biochemistry of the mitochondrial electron transport chain, also known as the respiratory chain. The pure substance isolated from beef heart mitochondria was sent to Dr. Karl Folkers at the pharmaceutical company Merck for identification and elucidation of its structure. It...

Background: Infertility can be a major concern for couples trying to conceive and occupational hazards can be a main cause in infertility in men. Studies conducted throughout the world indicate that workplace physical and chemical hazards could have a negative impact on male fertility. The main object of this study was to determine the frequency of occupational categories of men who attended an...
